Strong cold-season winds brought walls down onto fragile shelters sheltering people displaced by conflict in Gaza, claiming the lives of at least four individuals. This tragedy highlights the perilous situation that continue after over two years of intense bombardment and severe shortages of humanitarian assistance.

Truce Offers Little Respite from Harsh Weather

Although a truce has been active since October, aid groups state that Palestinians do not have the adequate shelter required to survive frequent cold-weather events.

Medical staff at Shifa hospital, which took in the bodies, said on this week that the dead include two women, a girl, and a man.

In a separate incident, the local health authority stated on the same day that a one-year-old boy died of hypothermia overnight.

"The world has allowed us to experience death in all its forms," said a family member following the burial. "While it is correct the shelling may have temporarily stopped, but we have witnessed all imaginable reasons of fatality in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Family Crushed in Tent Collapse

As per the medical center, three people of a one household — 72-year-old a man, his 15-year-old relative, and his daughter-in-law — were fatally injured when an eight-metre high wall collapsed on top of their tent in a coastal area of the city. No fewer than five additional people were injured in the incident.

Family members on Tuesday started clearing the rubble that had buried their family and reconstructing the temporary homes for those who remained.

Aid Efforts and Continuing Crisis

United Nations agencies and its aid organization allies were distributing tents, tarps, warm covers and clothing as well as food and sanitation items across Gaza, said the UN office for the coordination of humanitarian affairs.

Most of the population reside in improvised shelters since their houses were reduced to rubble over the course of the war. Humanitarian organizations say an insufficient amount of building supplies are reaching Gaza under the ceasefire.

Fatality Numbers Since the Truce

The Gaza health ministry, which is part of the administration, says more than four hundred and forty individuals have been fatally shot by gunfire and their bodies taken to hospitals after the truce went into effect. The ministry maintains comprehensive fatality data that are considered largely accurate by international bodies and independent experts.

A spokesperson for UNICEF, spokesperson for the UN children’s agency Unicef, said on that day that at least 100 children below eighteen years old – sixty males and forty girls – had been lost their lives since the truce started due to armed actions, such as drone strikes, air raids, artillery fire and use of live ammunition. These numbers, he explained, reflected incidents where sufficient details had been gathered to warrant documentation, but the overall count is expected to be higher. He noted that many hundreds of minors had been injured.

"Although 'explosions and shootings have decreased' during the truce, they have not ceased," Elder told journalists at a UN briefing in Geneva by video from the Strip. "Therefore what the world now terms calm would be considered a crisis in any other place," he concluded.

Third Cold Season of Hardship

Gaza’s residents of more than two million individuals has been fighting to keep the freezing temperatures and bad weather at bay while enduring lack of assistance and a lack of sturdier transitional shelter, which is urgently needed during the colder season. It’s the 3rd cold season after the war between the state and the group started on a date in late 2023, when fighters stormed into southern Israel and murdered around 1,200 individuals and took hostage two hundred and fifty-one others into Gaza.

Gaza’s health ministry says more than 71,400 people have been fatally injured in the subsequent military campaign.
