Vehicle Evading Law Enforcement Smashes into Tampa Nightspot, Claiming Four Deceased and Eleven Hurt

An high-speed vehicle that was evading law enforcement slammed into a crowded bar early on Saturday, killing four people and injuring 11 in a vintage neighborhood of Tampa, known for its nightlife and tourists.

An air surveillance team with the local police department spotted the vehicle driving dangerously on a freeway at about 12.40am after authorities said the light-colored car had been observed street racing in another neighborhood, as per a police department statement.

The state highway patrol caught up with the car and attempted to perform a maneuver that involves bumping a rear panel of a escaping car to cause it to spin out, called a precision immobilization technique, but it was ineffective.

Highway patrol officers “ended pursuit” as the vehicle sped toward the historic downtown district near downtown, Tampa police said. Ultimately, the driver lost control of the car and struck over a dozen individuals outside the bar, police said.

3 individuals perished at the location and a fourth victim died at a hospital. As of Saturday morning, a fifth casualty was admitted in critical condition, and eight additional patients were being cared for at local medical centers but were listed as not critical, authorities said. Two other victims sustained slight injuries and refused treatment at the site. All 15 victims are grown individuals.

“What happened this morning was a pointless tragedy, our hearts are with the loved ones of the victims and everyone who were impacted,” the Tampa police chief expressed in a message.

Authorities identified the alleged driver as 22-year Silas Sampson, who was booked on Saturday and is being detained at the local detention facility.

Court records showed the suspect has been charged with four counts of vehicular homicide and 4 charges of aggravated fleeing or eluding with serious bodily injury or death. All are serious crimes. No attorney was recorded for Sampson.

“Our entire city is mourning this loss,” said Tampa’s mayor, previously was the city’s first female top cop, in a post on social media.
“Our condolences are with everyone affected. The investigation into the incident is continuing, and efforts are underway to get answers,” the statement added.

Lately, some states and municipal authorities have pushed to limit the use of high-speed vehicle pursuits to protect both civilians and officers. Following a rise in fatalities, a recent report supported by the US justice department recommended police chases to be rarely used, noting that the danger to suspects, personnel and onlookers often exceeds the urgent need to take someone into custody.

Still, the state has doubled down on the methods, with the state’s highway patrol amending its guidelines to loosen restrictions on the use of vehicle pursuits and pit maneuvers. The justice department-backed analysis described these tactics as “dangerous” and “debated”.
