The Red Devils Poised to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich

Manchester United are finalising completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Marquee Acquisition for United

Schüller, who has six months left on her contract, has been a consistent goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has netted over 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. Her arrival is viewed as a marquee coup for the WSL team.

Her exit from Munich was expected after she was seen fighting back tears while thanking the German club’s fans following a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.

It was reported in late December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its top strikers. Per reports, all the paperwork for the transfer have now been completed.

Consistent Goalscoring to Boost the Forward Line

The experienced striker's signing should represent a significant uplift to the team's forward line. Schüller has been highly consistent in front of goal in the Bundesliga.

  • Over seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She won the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Building Steam at Old Trafford

Securing the German international coincides with a period when United seem to be building positive momentum.

Their recent performances include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the mid-season window has brought further business:

  1. The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since joining in 2023.

Regarding Miyazawa’s extension, a club official commented: “She has become a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”

The new defender, having arrived from a side from the NWSL, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
