A renowned South African radio and club DJ has been shot dead in the country's largest city Johannesburg, sending shockwaves across a country grappling with entrenched crime.

Warrick Stock, who went by the name DJ Warras, was gunned down in the central business district on Tuesday afternoon.

Police said the forty-year-old presenter was confronted by three individuals, one of whom opened fire on him before running away.

The reason of the shooting remains unclear and no arrests are in custody, according to authorities.

How It Happened

Police indicated that Stock was ambushed as he was departing from a premises in the vicinity of the city center landmark.

He had spent several hours at the building supervising the implementation of security systems, which had been controversially occupied by squatters, it was reported.

"It is alleged the deceased was approached by three unidentified men after he parked his car, and they began shooting at him before escaping on foot," an official report confirmed.

CCTV footage showed a man with dreadlocked hair and dressed in what looked like a protective services outfit opening fire on Stock before fleeing.

The DJ attempted to flee after he was hit but collapsed on the opposite side of the road.

Police added that Stock had an gun that was not fired and it was not a robbery during the incident.

Crucial forensic evidence, like cartridges, were found at the location.

Police have appealed members of the public who may have seen the suspects to assist with the investigation.

"Evidence suggests they covered significant ground after the attack, and investigators have been attempting to locate them to determine their location," stated a police chief.

"I am in shock. I am shattered," were her words.
