No fewer than 13 passengers killed and 98 injured in rail accident in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” stated the country's president.

The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The development of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an rapid pace, defying expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised persistent questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party demanded an immediate halt in the building and running of all such projects.

This halt was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."

In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these vital projects.
