Jailhouse Shock: Brazil's Ex-President Jair Bolsonaro Faces Life in Prison
He fought justice and the legal system prevailed.
Sixty days subsequent to getting a twenty-seven-year sentence for seeking to “annihilate” the nation's democratic institutions, former president Jair Bolsonaro now appears destined for incarceration.
Expected Incarceration
The found-guilty plotter – who had been living under house arrest in his estate while a number of court processes and challenges play out – is broadly anticipated to be jailed in the next few days, amid mounting talk that he will be moved to a well-known maximum security prison.
Past Comments on Prisoners
During Bolsonaro’s four-decade political career, the far-right former military man displayed minimal mercy for Brazil’s jailed individuals.
“Why should we give these dirtbags a good life?” he previously wondered. “They should just get fucked, full-fucking-stop. That’s what I reckon.”
On another occasion, Bolsonaro declared: “Unless you desire to wind up in prison, all you have to do is to avoid sexual assault, abduction or theft.”
Prison Facility Debate
However the idea of Bolsonaro himself landing in the Papuda prison high-security prison in Brasília has appalled allies, several of whom this week toured the prison in an seeming attempt to prevent the high court from sending him there.
Senator Lucas, a lawmaker from Bolsonaro’s political party who was one of the visitors, said he anticipated the septuagenarian figure to be imprisoned in the following week and a half and feared his location could be Papuda.
He asserted Bolsonaro’s acute intestinal ailments – the outcome of a almost deadly assault during the 2018 presidential presidential campaign – meant it would be risky to keep the former president there. “His condition is highly critical. He won’t be able to cope if they take him to Papuda … It would be terrible,” he added, who also worried about overcrowded cells and the condition of inmate food.
While visiting Papuda, Lucas remembered witnessing cells holding four dozen inmates: “That’s virtually one square meter per prisoner.
“We spoke to the inmates and they grumble, of course, of the terrible meals,” continued the senator.
Allies Speak Out
Lucas is not the only voice voicing opinions ahead of the former president’s expected detention.
Authoring in a prominent publication, another ally, the former communications minister Fábio Wajngarten, bemoaned the “harsh” finale to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” political career and claimed Brazil was about to witness “the biggest political injustice in its past”.
“It represents an injustice that eats away the souls of millions people in Brazil,” the former minister said.
Varied Popular Opinion
This could be accurate due to the considerable support Bolsonaro retains on the Brazilian right. But his expected incarceration has also gladdened the spirits of many other people who think he deserves to be imprisoned for planning to stop the incoming president from taking power – and even conspiring to have him murdered.
The lawmaker, a politician for the current president's political party, said: “Not a soul desires Bolsonaro to be placed in a dungeon. Not a soul desires Bolsonaro to be put in segregation. Nobody desires Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to rest on hard ground. We desire him to get proper handling – but respectful handling behind bars. He cannot continue being his self-appointed guard for his whole life.”
Otoni was struck by how Bolsonaro backers, who have long praising the tough treatment of convicts, had abruptly woken up to their privileges. “Just now has the far-right – which has repeatedly claimed that human rights should not be for criminals – opted to inspect a penitentiary to find out what circumstances are really like,” he said.
“He is a offender,” the congressman maintained, but that did not mean he earned “shameful, degrading conduct”.
Potential Jail Environment
In spite of speculation that Bolsonaro could be sent to Papuda, which presently contains about fourteen thousand detainees, his probable location appears to be a close jail for officers and other “particular” prisoners known as Papudinha (Small Papuda).
The accommodations are considerably more comfortable than those in the main prison, although still a distant from the comfort Bolsonaro experienced while residing in the stunning leader's home, around 20 kilometers away.
Based on information, the room Bolsonaro could anticipate occupy in Papudinha is about 260 square feet – roughly the size of a couple of car spots – and includes a 130 square foot bathroom with a shower and a 12 sq metre terrace. “The ex-president might be authorized to have a TV and also a cooler in his room as long as they were provided by his family,” sources stated.
Partisan Reactions
He criticized the talked-about proposal to send the one-time head of state to Papuda as “an act of retaliation” on the part of the supreme court judge who oversaw Bolsonaro’s legal case and will determine his fate in the {
