Federal authorities have entered the fray in a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to block the state's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, filed in federal court, challenges the redistricting plan championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that violates civil rights and mocks the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will survive legal scrutiny.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit claims that California's map improperly used race as a factor to heavily favor Latino communities in violation of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," stated a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major response by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that began in Texas and has spread across multiple states.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required public consent, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to flip just a handful of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the majority will shape the final years of the current administration, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its political program or face resistance, congressional probes and possible further challenges.
