Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was positioned in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a number of approach shafts providing entry to the facility... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike shows the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces participating in this operation for their skill and their valour," Healey commented. "Including them were thousands of British personnel stationed over the holidays. This operation, to take out militants who pose a risk to our safety, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
