Antony Price, Renowned for Styling David Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer responsible for many legendary styles associated with David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died at 80 years old.
He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, including the light-hued ensembles that featured in rock band Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement across their platforms."
Price's death comes less than a month after he unveiled his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the famous black velvet "revenge dress" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.
An Enduring Influence
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he began designing men's fashion at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by looks from model Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A frequent collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in crafting sculptural silhouettes made him a "true original," according to the UK's fashion authority.
During the nineties, he began working on outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included various looks for her American tour after assuming the title.
After a career spanning over fifty years, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in collaboration with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
- Sculpted Silhouettes: A hallmark of his work.
- Performative Style: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
- Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
- Working with Stars and Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.
The fashion world says farewell to a true visionary whose legacy on style and culture remains profoundly felt.
